#dhopsTGIF: DDC’s Film of the Year

d’Hops took great risks in order to film the first concept vid – such as trespassing on private property- FACT or FICTION?

You guys are right, again!

After some googling and much courage to step on abandoned and dangerous ground, DDC concept vid crew found the perfect spot to film at.

Did you also know that d’Hops released that concept video on YouTube in 2014?? Choreographed by our previous dance captains- Jessen Siew and Jamie Lau, and produced by nelsontyc.com, we must say it is pretty dope!

“The concept video came about cos Jessen and I were saying DDC should totally do our own concept videos. It was during the period where all these concept videos came out and everything was so cool. So we just choreographed and planned for it. We knew the vibe and feel we wanted, so we googled for abandoned places to film. We eventually found one which sure had the dirty vibe haha!”

Apart from the Dirty Vibe video, d’Hops recently released another concept video, ‘Hood Go Crazy’, just last year! DO WATCH IT IF YOU HAVE NOT! 😀

P.S Everything was filmed, edited and created by our own crew members!

Here are some facts you need to know about ‘Hood Go Crazy’

#1. This was an in-house production.

Shots, edits and video direction came from Natalie Tan, Willaine and Jia Yi , aka DDC’s up and coming Steven Spielbergs.

The dancers were great because we asked them to keep running it again and again under the ht sun in their warm costumes, but no one complained! The last scene was really cool when everyone came together too. The vibes were great!

#2. When there is a will, there is a way to film.

Filming was done at 3 locations over 2 days with a car, a UEboom, and many cameras! Our filmmakers went for a reccee at various locations in town and in school just to get that perfect blend of hip and hop.

#3. There is no I in TEAM.

Many of our dancers (from da DDC hood) played a part in the success of ‘Hood Go Crazy’. Without them, there…wouldn’t be any dancers in the video?! We featured 15 dancers from DDC 16/17. Let’s hope we are able to provide more avenues for our hood to show the world what they got!

The most memorable part of the entire filming process was the last scene, aka the ‘clubbing scene.’  We may seem like we were very happy on camera but we were actually very tired from jumping super long for that shot! Oh, not forgetting the dog shit nearby which we were trying not to step on.

#4. With great dancers, comes great responsibility.

These 15 members contributed to the choreography which was completed within 2 weeks. They were ‘crazy’ enough to put together everything in 3 weeks before filming.

Are you itching to get on that concept video bandwagon yet? We came up with some tips you may (or may not) find useful.

A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO CREATING YOUR OWN CONCEPT VID

  1. Do a site reccee and identify cool locations. Bonus swag points if you find an abandoned, ulu place.
  2. Decide on a concept or overall theme for the dance, coupled with some dope music and attire.
  3. Be a risk taker. Throw in props like a car, a dog or your younger sister. It usually garners more hits.
  4. Summon the kiasu-ness in you. Bring your spare cameras, batteries, tripods, stabiliser, lenses and lots of tissues. You never know when you need it.
  5. To make your MV look a tad more pro and multi-dimensional, don’t forget to take multiple runs at different angles and experiment with 360 rotation or forward backwards motion with your camera.

It’s been a wild ride with a concept like Dirty Vibe to one featuring a cray hood. So for those that are asking, what is actually d’Hops’ concept? The answer: it is simply having strength from unity, and we’re hoping this is exemplified in our concept videos then, now and soon to come!
